Shunyam, Pune

Set on a 400-sq. m. plot amid the density of Mundhwa, Pune, Shunyam takes its name from the Sanskrit for emptiness — a house built around spiritual nothingness rather than around itself. A perimeter of green screens the residence from its surroundings, and the near-total absence of outward-facing openings lets inhabitants withdraw from urban clutter into a meditative interior world. Within its 297 sq. m. of built form, the house holds a joint family across a prayer room, a meditation space, a children's playroom and shared family areas, organised around the five elements of earth, fire, water, sky and space. Detached, floating walls carry light and cross-ventilation deep into the plan through light passages, skylights, glazed flooring strips and clerestory windows, while privacy is preserved by admitting daylight only through crevice-like offsets in the walls, rendered in glass block. Structure is left exposed — in canopies, staircases, grills and skylights — giving the house a pared-back, minimalist bearing. Passive strategies govern its performance: monitor windows drive stack-effect ventilation, solar panels and vermicompost pits manage its resources, and a terrace kitchen garden tempers solar gain while returning the landscape displaced by construction. Rapidly renewable materials — MDF, cane, wood, paper, cotton — keep its footprint light. Around the plot's edge, bamboo curtains and water features stage a continuous exchange between built and natural; a transitional living room opens fully to this landscape through rolling screens and sliding doors, and a double-height dining space draws in westerly breezes pre-cooled by a landscaped water body along the boundary. Left in their raw states, natural materials bind interior to exterior in a single sensory continuity. Amid the routine of the city, Shunyam holds itself apart — a place to watch the sunrise, listen for birdsong, register the turn of seasons, and return, briefly, inward.
